Ex-Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez 'was a genius but cold and unfair — I wanted to PUNCH him'

  • In his new book, Kop hero Jerzy Dudek lifts the lid on what life was really like under Spaniard who returns to Anfield as the Magpies' manager this weekend

Dudek claims in his book that poor man-management by Benitez almost drove him to violence

Jerzy Dudek was one of the stars of the Miracle of Istanbul, his wobbly legs routine helping Liverpool win the 2005 Champions League final in a penalty shoot-out after coming from 3-0 down at half-time against AC Milan.

That was manager Rafa Benitez’s finest hour with the club. But, ahead of Benitez’s return to Anfield with struggling Newcastle on Saturday, Dudek reveals in his entertaining autobiography why wanted to HIT the Spaniard... and claims he wasn’t the only one.

Jerzy Dudek: A Big Pole In Our Goal (RRP £18.99, £14.99 on sportmediashop.com — ebook also available), published Friday April 22 .

Rafa Benitez is truly passionate about the game.

He has a great knowledge of football. He’s not a fool who comes out with theories that are all talk. His problem is that he’s not a great ‘people person’ so always encounters problems when managing a group because he is very cold and hard-faced in how he makes decisions.

He kept a distance between himself and his players – like there was an invisible wall there – but it didn’t stop him from being a genius of a coach.

After the Champions League triumph, I felt he was treating me unfairly, but that’s how Rafa operated. He did everything so coldly, almost inhumanely, because he saw things as business.

He had to protect his interests, but it was hard to be on the receiving end of it. when I returned to Melwood I had a new rival - Jose ‘Pepe’ Reina, a Spanish international, had been signed from Villarreal for a reported £6million.

I wasn’t happy and went straight in to see Benitez, who tried to calm me down.

“It doesn’t mean that I’ll let you go."

“You don’t buy a player for so much money to leave him on the bench... Should I look for a new club or will you take care of selling me?”

“Okay, let’s wait for serious offers. Then we’ll start to talk money. We’ll find a good solution for everybody.”

I loved being at Liverpool, but Benitez clearly didn’t want me.

I’d been the hero in Istanbul so could I now just be a fire-fighter who waits for the moment when a fire needs fighting?

If this was Poland, the media and fans would have demanded that I play, but I didn’t have that support in England.

Then rumours started that I was earning between £60,000-70,000 per week and Benitez wanted me off the wage bill.

I wondered if someone had made this story up to try and turn the Liverpool supporters against me. I was confused, so I spoke about what Benitez was up to.

The main interest was from FC Cologne, so I told Benitez I wanted to go there.

He said it would be a good move for me, adding: “We’ll definitely help you, we’ll do whatever it takes to make a deal.”

The negotiations started. I was in touch with Cologne regularly and they told me Benitez wouldn’t speak to them. I got more and more frustrated with him until transfer deadline day when I finally boiled over.

As soon as training had finished, I stormed over to him and ripped my gloves off in an aggressive manner. I was so angry that the lads said later the aggression was pouring out of me. I raised my voice.

The lads could see I was fuming, so all hung around to see what would happen — footballers love seeing a bit of confrontation on the training ground!

I was furious with him, absolutely fuming, and in my head I could hear a devilish voice saying ‘Punch him in the face – punch him in the face and he’ll let you go to Germany’.

To be completely honest, I genuinely considered punching Rafa in the face. Then the consequences of doing so flashed through my mind. Would he let me go? Or would it just lead to a massive media scandal? Surely I couldn’t stay if I gave him a smack?

I don’t know how, but I managed to stop myself.

Punching a Liverpool manager who had won the European Cup only a few months earlier wouldn’t have looked too good on the CV, I guess, but I was still angry.

“You said you’d help me. You said you’d do everything to get a deal through. You didn’t mean it. You promised you would help me but now I have a concrete offer you’ve not kept your word.”

As I walked off towards the dressing room, Stevie walked alongside me.

“You wanted to punch him, didn’t you, lad? You really wanted to f***ing punch him...”

I explained to the lads in the dressing room how he’d promised to help me move but was now going back on what he said.

I worked under Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid and while no such thing as an ideal coach exists you’d be close to finding it if you combined his and Rafa’s qualities.

Mourinho had more respect in the dressing room because he was a more personable character who spoke to his players as people.

It was a different philosophy, but one that helped players to accept his demands in training more than they did from Benitez.

Most of the lads didn’t like it and Stevie was one of them.

I knew he had some issues with Rafa and twice it looked like he might leave Liverpool for Chelsea.

Rafa wanted him to leave – I think he thought he could buy three or four players with the money – but, deep down, Stevie didn’t want to go.

I know that the relationship between Stevie and Rafa was never the same afterwards and because Benitez had played games with me regarding a potential transfer I was on Stevie’s side, even if I decided not to say anything publicly.

Stevie once said to me that it would have been great if Mourinho could have taken over at Anfield when Rafa left.

I think it was after my leaving, when I came to Liverpool as a Real Madrid player in the Champions League. I remember those words well, even if it was just a casual conversation.

I think Liverpool could have improved under Mourinho. Stevie and Jose had a mutual respect.

It’s a pity that Stevie didn’t come to Real.

In my opinion, that move would have extended his career at the top level for at least two years and he would have learned even more by playing for Mourinho.

Liverpool 0-1 Man United: Wayne Rooney scores with visitors' only shot on target - 5 things we learned

Jurgen Klopp's side looked the likelier to score at Anfield, but the Man United skipper saves the day for Louis van Gaal

Wayne Rooney struck with Man United's only shot on target to claim three points at Liverpool - and save Louis van Gaal's bacon.

The Red Devils skipper scored his first goal at Anfield for 11 years to secure the win despite another disappointing display.

Tempers flared early on when Lucas reacted to a Marouane Fellaini challenge in a quiet first half for both sides.

David De Gea made a fine save from Emre Can just after the hour mark and parried Firminho's follow-up as Liverpool pressed for an opener.

Sakho then head a chance to head the Reds in front, before Jordon Ibe replaced Adam Lallana.

Then Rooney struck with the visitors' first shot on target in the game to secure three points.

Here are five things we learned from the game:

Early clash: Lucas Leiva and Marouane Fellalini in action

Referee Mark Clattenburg keeps Marouane Fellaini out of the way after the clash with Lucas Leiva

1) Animosity on the pitch... but not off it
For all the animosity between Manchester United and Liverpool – and there was lots on the pitch, with Lucas apparently taking a personal and precise dislike towards Fellaini – there seemed to be a genuine warmth between two managers.

Louis van Gaal didn't test Jurgen Klopp's fiery temperament on the touch line mind, preferring to remain stoically seated virtually throughout the game, but the pair embraced as though old friends before kick off, and shared what seemed liked an extended comedy riff to the amusement of both.

Maybe it was something on how the hell have they swapped the top of the Bundesliga, from when they last met as Dortmund and Munich managers, to a mid-table clash in frozen northern England?

Adam Lallana has a header saved by David De Gea

2) Man United's tactics continue to baffle
That though, was about as warm as this got in this contest, which rarely thawed, never mind reached the boiling point contests between these two sides normally sustain. United's tactics didn't help, as they seemed pathologically reluctant to commit forward in numbers, and were content instead to pass the ball slowly across the pitch, even when they seemed to have the chance to break swiftly.

Liverpool though, appeared to anticipate as much, and set out with a 4-3-3 formation that morphed quickly into 4-4-2 and too easily slipped into 4-5-1, which created a dour midfield struggle for a good hour of the game.

3) Real Madrid should be kicking themselves over De Gea
Even so, the home side did create some opportunities with their – at times, it has to be said – slick interchange of passing between Firmino, Lallana and Milner.

They really should have done better in the first half when Lallana, Firmino and Henderson all probably should have converted, but that is ignoring the obvious and psychologically challenging barrier of David De Gea though, who seems to intimidate forwards with his mere presence. He made three fine saves here. Again. Without him, United would surely be a mid table side this season, just as they would have been last season.

That was some business not selling him last summer...or some appalling decision making by Real Madrid.
Adam Lallana in action with Chris Smalling

4) Klopp a little slow to change things up
In such a gritty, turgid contest, it was a puzzle why Klopp didn't try to change things around a little earlier, and revert to the Benteke option...especially with Blind playing at centre half for their opponents.

There was a moment midway through the second half when Liverpool finally overloaded United on the far post, Milner delivered the perfect cross; and Mama Sakho mistimed his jump woefully to head over.

Say what you like about Benteke, but had he been on the pitch then, he'd have been in that position and would have got above the ball. He is a goalscorer, and given in this game the home side so desperately required someone to finish off their superior approach play, it was mystifying why he wasn't used sooner.

Marcos Rojo with the Manchester United fans in the stand

5) Set pieces still Liverpool's woe at the back - and you wonder how
Which of course gave Manchester United a foothold in the game their unimaginative play didn't truly deserve. The goal, when it arrived, came from a set piece – obviously with this Liverpool side – and the only surprise was that it took Van Gaal's side SO long to work out that their opponents are vulnerable when you swing the ball into the box.

Seriously, have they not watched any tv for the past 12 months. Match of the Day? You wonder what video work they can be doing when their first four set pieces were all directed away from goal instead of swinging it into the mixer. When they finally did (and even then only from a short corner) they scored. It's not rocket science is it?

Player ratings - by Dave Kidd:

Liverpool
  • Mignolet 5 Rarely tested but doesn't command box and distribution was poor.
  • Clyne 7 Quality performer defensively and on the overlap.
  • Toure 7 Rolled back the years with some good old-school defending
  • Sakho 6 The cult hero won his usual quota of big headers.
  • Moreno 6 Good defensively, started brightly when going forward but faded
  • Lucas 6 Certainly knew it was a derby – kicked everything in a white shirt early on.
  • Henderson 5 The captain adopted a weird shoot-on-sight policy which didn't work.
  • Can 7 Worked himself sockless, twice forced good saves from De Gea.
  • Milner 6 Manic workrate but no great quality about his end product.
  • Lallana 6 Some pleasing touches around the box but no penetration
  • Firmino 5 He's not a true centre forward and – unlike the Arsenal game – it showed.
  • Subs: Ibe (for Lallana, 76 min, 5), Benteke (for Toure, 81 min, 5), Caulker (for Milner, 84 min, 5)

Star performer: Man United would be in all kinds of problems without this man

Manchester United
  • De Gea 7 Three fine saves in the second half – where would United be without him?
  • Young 6 Solid enough until suffering groin injury before half-time.
  • Smalling MOM booked 8 Back to his accomplished best after some recent wobbles
  • Blind 7 Tidied up well at the back and used the ball effectively.
  • Darmian 6 Better at right-back in the second half than left-back in the first.
  • Schneiderlin 7 Effective job screening the back four. A real Van Gaal player.
  • Fellaini booked 5 Untidy and niggly. Riled the home crowd.
  • Herrera 7 The fans' favourite was one of the few United players with creative spark
  • Lingard 5 Failed to make any real impact before being replaced by Mata
  • Rooney 6 Won it with a fifth goal in four but did very little else of note.
  • Martial 6 Isolated on the left when his pace might have caused problems centrally.
  • Subs: Borthwick-Jackson (for Young, 42 min, 6), Mata (for Lingard, 66 min, 6), Depay (for Herrera, 72 min, 6).

West Ham 2-0 Liverpool: 5 things we learned as Andy Carroll scored against his old club

Michail Antonio opened the scoring before former Liverpool striker Andy Carroll added a second against his former club

Never mind Liverpool. It is West Ham who could be the latest unlikely challengers for the top four.

Headed goals from Michail Antonio and Andy Carroll completed the Hammers’ first double over the Reds for 51 years.

It also lifted the east Londoners up to fifth in the Premier League table, three points behind fourth-placed Spurs and five points clear of eighth-placed Liverpool.

Antonio’s 10th-minute goal made it the first time he has scored in consecutive appearances since November 2014.

Carroll’s effort, 10 minutes after half time was the first time he has scored in successive games since January 2015.

West Ham were solid at the back and vibrant up front. After two straight wins, Liverpool were back to their worst - AWOL at the back and unable to unlock the Hammers’ defence up front.

Their best chance came shortly before half time when Emre Can’s long-range effort his the bar.

West Ham could have had a third had Carroll and Antonio directed their efforts straight at Mignolet in the second half when they should have scored.

Opener: Michail Antonio celebrates after scoring the first goal for West Ham

1. Liverpool have become a team that West Ham are no longer afraid of
The Irons were 3-0 winners at Anfield in the reverse fixture in August. In fact, they have now won three of the last four meetings between the two sides.

This was the first time that West Ham have done the double over their more celebrated rivals since the 1963-64 season.

Their two wins this season have been for the loss of zero goals with five scored.

The Hammers’ solidity in that back five meant that although the Reds’ approach play looked good going forward they were ultimately frustrated.

Astonished: Jurgen Klopp wasn't impressed with some of the refereeing

2. If Liverpool are in the hunt for the top four then why not West Ham?
After losing their first two home league games the Hammers have not been beaten in any of the subsequent seven, winning three and drawing four. Even with all their injuries they are still hard to beat, losing just two of their last nine. Their defeats to Leicester, Watford and Spurs are not looking too bad now given what those clubs are doing this season. And they ended this match above the Reds - three points behind fourth-placed Spurs.

Blow: Andy Carroll scores the second goal for West Ham

3. Michael Antonio is giving Bilic a real headache with his performances
He has had to wait for his opportunity since signing from Forest in the summer. There have been jokes about his absence on Twitter and suggestions that he could go back out on loan to a Championship club. He looked good last week against Southampton, however, and tracked back as well as scoring the decisive goal here. He has earned the right to keep his place - even when Victor Moses is fit.

Joy: Carroll celebrates scoring against his old club

4. With those rumours about Klopp being in for Ter Stegen, Mignolet did not need a day like this
He was beaten twice, not helped by his defence and lacked the authority to give them the kick up the jacksie that they needed. Simon Mignolet will be a nervous man during this January transfer window. Klopp continues to back him but how long can he do so with Liverpool losing games?

Dejected: Christian Benteke and Roberto Firmino react after West Ham's second goal

5. The Jurgen Klopp effect is dissolving into a stark reality for Liverpool
All of the problems that cost Brendan Rodgers are weighing Klopp down like an anchor. The goalkeeper and defence are not good enough. Daniel Sturridge was yet again unavailable. Lucas was outgunned in midfield by the greater industry of Kouyate and Noble and Firmino at the moment is an expensive disappointment.

Liverpool will not finish in the top four unless deal with at least some of those issues - starting with their problems in defence.
