Simba yamalizia hasira Singida Utd

Man United 3-2 Arsenal: Marcus Rashford's superb double hits Gunners' title hopes - 5 things we learned

Marcus Rashford celebretes scoring  second goal

The 18-year-old scored twice and set up Ander Herrera's third in a phenomenal display, while Mesut Ozil's assist and goal can't save Gunners

Marcus Rashford struck twice and set-up Ander Herrera's third to hand Manchester United a huge win against Arsenal.

Rashford scored twice in three minutes to continue his remarkable week and reignite United's fading top-four hopes and harm the Gunners' title chances.

The first, a flourishing finish, was followed by a glancing header that has seen the 18-year-old local lad take his goal tally to four in two games, following his brace in Thursday's 5-2 Europa League win over FC Midtjylland .

Danny Welbeck scored before half-time to reduce the deficit.

Rashford set up Herrera as Man United added a third, before Ozil kept Arsenal in the game with a fine finish.

Louis van Gaal was finally cheered by the Old Trafford faithful when feigning a dive on the sidelines - a response to Alexis Sanchez.

And there might be a few more cheers after this win. Here's what we learned.

1) Rashford has no fear
Fresh from his two-goal debut heroics in midweek, Marcus Rashford , 18, was United's main man again, scoring twice in three minutes to set up the win, as well as assisting the third.

No fear and a star in the making.

2) Varela proves his worth
Signed by David Moyes and brought back into the fold by Van Gaal, Varela proved his value with a hand in United's opening two goals, while he began the move for the third.

Only blot a caution for tugging back Sanchez.

3) Walcott has a day to forget
Culpable for United's opener, when he lost possession cheaply, Walcott was abject throughout.

Sloppy on the ball and more of a liability than an asset, he was hooked just after the hour.

4) Ramsey lucky not to see red
Ramsey escaped a sending-off, despite shoving Herrera to the ground after the United midfielder scythed into him with a late challenge.

Despite the reckless nature of the foul, Ramsey can consider himself lucky.

5) Van Gaal the fall-guy
Louis van Gaal rarely leaves his seat in the dug-out, but here it was worth the wait, the United boss dropping to the ground in front of the fourth official to mock Sanchez for a perceived dive.

Yanga yatangaza raha

FIFA election: Gianni Infantino voted new president

  • UEFA general secretary replaces banned Sepp Blatter at the helm of football's world governing body.

Gianni Infantino has been elected as the new president of FIFA, succeeding the banned Sepp Blatter on a term until 2019.

Infantino, the UEFA general secretary, received 115 votes in Friday's second round of voting, more than the required majority of 104 votes from the 207 members.

The other favourite, Sheikh Salman Bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa of Bahrain, had 88 votes.

Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein of Jordan had four and Frenchman Jerome Champagne none.

The 45-year-old former lawyer saluted voters by patting his right hand over his heart, and had to compose himself before starting his acceptance speech.

"We will restore the image of FIFA and the respect of FIFA. And everyone in the world will applaud us," Infantino said, referring to bribery and corruption investigations that have rocked football's governing body and forced Blatter out of office after more than 17 years as president.

"I want to be the president of all of you ... It is time to return to football. FIFA has gone through hard times, crisis times," said Infantino.

"These times are over ... We have to win back the respect, and focus on this wonderful game that is football."

In the first round, Infantino surprising led with 88 votes. Sheikh Salman had 85 votes, Prince Ali 27, and Champagne seven.

Al Jazeera's sports correspondent Lee Wellings, reporting from Zurich, said the pledge of financial support by Infantino to FIFA members might have tilted the balance of votes in his favour.

"Very few people who were at Infantino's manifesto launch felt he could be taking the top job. He put together a good event there and a good campaign," he said.

"What might have been crucial is the pledge of money that Infantino made. But can he back that up by finding that money? We'll see. But that would have made a huge difference because old habits die hard at FIFA."

Infantino is the second straight FIFA president from the Valais region in the Swiss Alps. Infantino is from Brig and replaces the 79-year-old Blatter, who was born in neighbouring Visp.

Blatter was forced out by the pressure of American and Swiss investigations of corruption that hit FIFA two days before the previous election in May.

There were only four candidates on Friday's ballot after Tokyo Sexwale withdrew during his campaign speech to voters, and all four went forward to the second round.

Not since 1974 has a second-round vote been held in a FIFA presidential election.

Then, Joao Havelange of Brazil beat 13-year incumbent Stanley Rous of England 68-52 after an initial 62-56 ballot in Frankfurt, Germany.

Infantino exceeded most observers' expectations after an impressive 15-minute pitch, only 20 minutes before first-round voting began.

The Swiss-Italian spoke in several languages without notes and portrayed himself as a leader for the world, not just his own wealthy confederation.

"We have to get Europe to do much more," Infantino said.

His campaign promised more of key FIFA gifts to member federations: More guaranteed funding from FIFA's $5bn-plus World Cup revenue, more places in an expanded 40-team tournament and more opportunities to stage the World Cup with multi-national regional hosting.

Set of reform passed at Congress

Earlier, the Congress had overwhelmingly passed a set of reforms intended to make FIFA more transparent, professional and accountable.

That package should mean the new president faces much closer scrutiny than Blatter did, and have less influence over the day-to-day management of the organisation's business affairs.

The reforms include term limits for top officials and disclosure of earnings, and a clear separation between an elected FIFA Council responsible for broad strategy and a professional general secretariat, akin to a company's executive board, handling the business side.

The big debate: who will finish higher in the Premier League - Arsenal or Tottenham?

  • Both north London sides secured hugely important wins at the weekend and remain level on points, but which side has the edge?

Sunday saw both sides from north London stake their claims to the Premier League crown.

Arsenal came from behind to beat table-topping Leicester thanks to a 95th-minute Danny Welbeck winner , while Tottenham weathered a late wobble to see off Manchester City 2-1 at the Etihad.

The two sides - separated only by goal difference - are just two points off the top and have the momentum to be considered favourites to be browned champions in May.

Have your say in our comments section below

But which side has the edge, and who will finish higher? MirrorFootball's writers have had their say...

John Cross - Tottenham
History tells us that Tottenham will finish behind Arsenal and blow up in the Premier League title race.

But this is the most un-Spursy Tottenham team that I've seen for many, many years.

They look strong, well organised and have a wonderful team spirit. Mauricio Pochettino has got them well drilled, his substitutions are excellent and they've got this wonderful advantage of being the surprise package with less pressure on their shoulders.

I really should know better. But I fancy Tottenham to win the title. They can do it this year. Arsenal wait all this time, buy in big superstars and yet it could be their neighbours with their home grown kids who steal their thunder.

James Nursey - Arsenal
Arsenal. They have more firepower and attacking options than Spurs in my opinion.

I feel Tottenham are light up front and will be badly affected if Harry Kane picks up an injury or suspension.

Daniel Levy could live to regret not coughing up enough money to get Saido Berahino from West Brom, who is a fine finisher and bright English prospect.

Darren Lewis - Tottenham
Tough one this. Tottenham have the momentum, Arsenal have the experience.

Tottenham have the best defence in the Premier League, Arsenal proved yet again yesterday that they have a superb array of attacking talent.

(That said, the Gunners goal difference is still inferior.)

Both clubs have some tough away games to come but Tottenham could have the edge as they remain undefeated away from home since the opening day of the season. Even then Manchester United were very fortunate to beat them.

Arsenal have shown superb mental strength to come through the last two games with wins against Bournemouth and Leicester.

But I think Tottenham's superior consistency on the road could edge it and end the many years of hurt for Spurs at the hands for their north London rivals.

I still think the whole thing is wide open and that Leicester remain very much in the hunt as they are the only side in the top four with no FA Cup or European commitments.

But I've had a well-documented feeling for some time that Tottenham could end this season with Champions League football at least. I've been lucky enough to follow Mauricio Pochettino's team as their challenge has taken shape and gathered pace.

I think it will go to the wire but I can see Spurs edging it.

Hamish Mackay - Arsenal
I've seen this one before, and I know how it ends.

Tottenham go on their best run since 1961 (it's always the best since 1961) but fall down at the final hurdle and are overtaken by, yes, Arsenal.

Granted, this Spurs side has the best defence in the league and - barring any gastronomic sabotage - isn't going to collapse.

But Tottenham still have to face Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea, as well as playing West Ham at the Boleyn Ground.

They're also still in the Europa League, and likely will be for a while with Mauricio Pochettino vowing to take it very seriously.

Arsenal's European exploits, meanwhile, are almost certain to be over in a month's time and Arsene Wenger has proven his teams know how to finish a season strongly.

Adrian Kajumba - Tottenham
Arsenal have history on their side – Spurs haven't finished above them since 1995.

But the Gunners also have the tougher run-in fixture list with trips to Manchester United, Spurs, Everton, West Ham and Manchester City among their last 12 games.

Spurs' is slightly more favourable with trips to Liverpool and Chelsea their toughest trips left.

It's tough to go against Arsenal and their greater experience when it comes to challenging at the top of the table at the business end of the season and finishing above Spurs.

But Spurs are the real deal under their brilliant boss Mauricio Pochettino and victories like yesterday's at Manchester City only strengthening that belief.

And with their kinder fixture list and stingy defence – the league's meanest – I think they can finally end their wait to finish higher than Arsenal in the Premier League.

Ben Burrows - Arsenal
If it weren't for Leicester and their rags to riches, ostriches to all-conquerors story then Tottenham would undeniably be the story of the season.

The way Mauricio Pochettino has brutally battered the inherent Spurs-ness out of Spurs has been remarkable to see. They are without doubt the best team in the race and deserve their place at the very heart of the title shake-up.

But will they actually win it? I still can't see it.

Arsenal remain, on paper, and where it matters, on the pitch, the better side. They have more depth, more star power and, crucially, more winning nous to get over the line.

It won't be pretty and there are sure to be plenty more twists and turns before it's all said and done. But when the music stops I think Arsenal will be the last men standing. Just.

Alex Richards - Arsenal
The two north London clubs head into the final throes of the campaign level on points, but while Spurs look the more well-coached of the duo - perhaps the best coached side in the entire league - it’s difficult to bet against Arsenal once more finishing above their rivals.

The Gunners next two away games will likely shape their championship destiny - Manchester United and Spurs are both difficult tasks. Come through them in good shape and Wenger’s side, fresh from the win over Leicester, will be further emboldened.

Danny Welbeck is now back and adds another attacking option while in Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez, they have two bona-fide match winners capable of weaving a moment of difference-making magic.

That individualism is something that Spurs perhaps are lacking, someone who can win the game when the team isn't at its best. Additionally, while Mauricio Pochettino’s men continue battling on three fronts and enjoying double training sessions, how long before fatigue becomes too much to contend with?

Spurs' campaign has been remarkable, but I’d still be surprised if they finish above Arsenal come the season’s end.

Vithushan Ehantharajah - Arsenal
Let's get this out of the way early: Sunday showed us that this isn't a very Spursy Spurs side and the second-half Alamo at the Emirates showed a fight and fortitude that wasn't very Arsenal. Of course, there's plenty of time for both sets of players to revert to type. But, for now, let us assume this dreamworld we all entered back in August continues on into May.

Mauricio Pochettino success has been largely down to work ethic that sees Spurs outrun every other Premier League side, but you have to wonder how much their key quartet of Harry Kane, Toby Alderwireld, Hugo Lloris and Eric Dier will have left in the tank for the final third of the season. For Arsenal, Daniel Welbeck's return brings another forward option – something Spurs lack – while Theo Walcott and Joel Campbell, who was an unused substitute on the weekend, can come into the starting XI without distorting the system too much. Ultimately, we could be about to see how Tottenham manage, through injury or otherwise, without one of their four pillars.

It all comes to a head at lunchtime on Saturday March 5 at White Hart Lane. Both teams go into one of the most anticipated north London derbies having played midweek. Arsenal host a Swansea side they should pick apart comfortably, but Tottenham are away to West Ham in a fixture that is normally enough to warrant it's own a big sell and days of preparation. And while both sides will have nine fixtures left after their tussle, you get the feeling that the toll of losing to a bitter rival, and spurning three points on the home straight, will be too much to overcome.

And with that, the title is Arsenal's.
