Real Madrid ponder snatching Jose Mourinho from Manchester United as Louis van Gaal clings to job

  • Spanish giants split on taking Special One back to Bernabeu as United dither

REAL MADRID are considering making a late big to snatch Jose Mourinho from the clutches of Manchester United.

The Spanish giants fear being left with no managerial options to replace Rafa Benitez if Mourinho succeeds Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford.

Real president Florentino Perez has sounded out his board to see whether they would welcome taking the Special One back to the Bernabeu.

And though officials are split, Perez fears being left short of a replacment if the club finally decide to sack under—pressure Benitez.

United have lined up Mourinho to take charge when they put Van Gaal out of his misery, and they have received assurances he would be willing to accept their offer.

But with a shortage of top class managers around, Real fear being backed into a corner if the don’t act swiftly to get someone in place to take over from Benitez.

The former Liverpool boss is under increasing pressure in Spain, with talk of player unrest at his tactics and team selection.

The supporters turned on him when they went 2-1 down against Rayo Vallecano, and there was a still a feeling of resentment among them even though Real went on to win trhe game 10-2.

Cristiano Ronaldo is understood to have been fuming at the whistling from the stands during the game, and that he got abuse himself after trying to remonstrate with them.

Perez and other Madrid officials are aware Benitez is not popular among the rank and file, and though he publicly backed his manager last week there are suggestions he could be axed by the end of the month.

The views of Ronaldo and Sergio Ramos are hugely important at the club, and both have been left unimpressed by some of the decisions Benitez has taken.

The pair didn’t want Carlo Ancelotti to leave at the end of last season, and they were both disappointed to see him snapped up by Bayern Munich this week.

With Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, Pep Guardiola Manchester City—bound and Diego Simeone a non-stater because he manages city rivals Atletico, Mounrinho is the only recognised world class manager open to Real.

Zinedine Zidane is the club’s youth team coach but it is thought he needs another season or two in charge of B-team Castilla before he is really ready to assume such a challenging role.

Yet Ronaldo and Ramos would both need convincing themselves that Mourinho is the right fit for Real, as they each had their own problems with the Portuguese in his previous three yeat stay at the club.

Perez is confident he can iron out those differences and would be willing to go out on a limb to try to tempt Mourinho back.

If the Spaniards do make a move, it would increase the pressure on United to make a decision of their own.

They have been reluctant to swing the axe on Van Gaal but are aware they cannot allow the alarming slump in form to continue much longer.

And they also know, like Real, that if they wait too long they could be looking around desperately trying to find a coach with the right credentials to take charge.
